Cast Aside Productions is dedicated to producing new and classic works, providing a platform for theater artists to add their vision and voice to the arts community. As a Portland-based, professional non-profit that believes deeply in the value of local art and artists, we are proud to present the Cast Aside Awards: honoring excellence in Maine high school musical theater.
The retention, training, and support of theater artists of all disciplines within our community are central to CAP’s goals and values. High school is the first place most people experience the collaborative creation of a musical, becoming the training ground for the next generation of theater professionals and patrons, alike. We aim to recognize this work for its important influence on the growth of theater arts in Maine and their contribution to making the state a great place to live and work.
Starting Oct 1, 2017 and running through May 12, 2018, Cast Aside will be sending a delegation of associated theater artists from a mix of backgrounds and disciplines to a range of shows across Southern Maine high schools. Prize categories to be awarded will include Best Musical Production and Best Ensemble, as well as individual performance, design, and crew awards. To ensure inclusion and fairness, programs will be split into divisions based on total production budget. We also want to learn how students and educators are working together to bring these productions to the stage.
While there is great theater happening in high schools across the state, we are regrettably limited in how far we can travel. If you know of a production that is outside of York or Cumberland counties, but want to share the great work being done, please reach out so that we can hear about all the excellent ways theater is being fostered throughout Maine.
